Gavin Olivier

With more than 18 years of experience in the audiovisual, control and entertainment industry, Gavin Olivier plays an integral role in the conceptualisation and management of projects undertaken by Totem Media. Gavin also runs Digital Fabric, a consultancy to the museum and visitor attractions industry that has, over the last six years, become South Africa’s leading technical consultancy in these fields.

Digital Fabric offers a wide range of services that extend beyond the purely technical aspects of attraction design and is able to assist with the development of concept, design and content production. This is evident in the range of projects undertaken by Digital Fabric, which include many groundbreaking firsts for Southern Africa, including:
  • First permanently installed High Definition theatre
  • First installed stereoscopic (3D) theatre
  • First and only 4D cinema
  • First use of High Definition content in a museum environment
  • The only 3D mapping installation combining digital projection and 3D physical modelling
  • The first installed horizontal interactive projection concept.

Many of the above projects still stand alone in this country because of their unique nature, and continue to collect awards, including two silver Loeries and two IMA (International Media Awards).

Digital Fabric has contributed to some of South Africa’s most meaningful museum and attraction projects and as testimony to the quality of work, continues to work with most of these institutions as they grow and change. These projects include:

  • Origins Centre, Wits
  • Sci-Bono Science Centre
  • Freedom Park //hapo museum
  • Apartheid Museum
  • Liliesleaf, Rivonia Trial Museum
  • Maropeng
  • Sterkfontein Caves
  • Durban Natural Science Museum
  • Gold Reef City Heritage Tours and 4D Theatres

  • De Beers Diamond Experience, Kimberley Big Hole
  • Amafa-Umgungungdlovu Visitor Centre, Ulundi

Digital Fabric is able to stay at the leading edge of technology through working relationships with manufacturers and integrators and maintains strong international ties to likeminded suppliers, user groups and associations. This is evident in the groundbreaking nature of the interactive projects undertaken, many of which were developed from scratch. Some photo examples are shown below.

Gavin Olivier is a team player and is able to contribute to all of the project processes from concept through engineering and final delivery. His intimate understanding of the integration and contracting business allows him to manage these processes from a position of knowledge and respect. He is instrumental in the development and running of SACIA, a local chapter of the ICIA, International Communications Industry Association, which promotes education and standards control in the audiovisual industry worldwide.
