Liliesleaf is a site of memory and learning situated in Rivonia, Johannesburg. Once the secret headquarters of the liberation struggle and Umkhonto we Sizwe, today Liliesleaf is one of South Africa’s foremost heritage sites, where visitors are invited to engage with and reflect on South Africa’s history of repression and resistance.

Members of Totem have been involved in the design and management of all exhibition development at Liliesleaf, including content development, since 2007.

During this time Liliesleaf garnered several awards for its innovative technology, including two International IMA awards and two silver Loeries. The heritage site includes over 40 channels of media and includes many interactive devices, each one developed for the site. The dining room of the manor house features South Africa’s first ever interactive projection table, and elsewhere on the site digital media has been combined within exhibit fabric and model making to achieve engaging experiences for visitors.

In 2015 Totem was officially contracted to provide exhibition management services to Liliesleaf. Subsequently we have been closely involved in the conceptualisation and development of two major projects, the Humanities Hub, and an exhibition on the role of Sweden in the liberation movement.
