PROJECTS OVERVIEW

Totem Media's original project was the Origins Centre at the University of the Witwatersrand. This world-class museum celebrates the origin of humans in Africa with an extraordinary collection of early material culture. The exhibition uses art as a narrative story-telling device throughout the museum.

Prof. PG Raman, University of the Free State, in Architecture South Africa, January/February 2007

“More than any other recent museum, the Origins Centre succeeds in disseminating a vast range of research and intellectual material from a diverse range of fields in a coordinated way that’s accessible to a lay public. Its use of a wide variety of presentation techniques, perfectly suited to the requirement of each visitor, is a rare achievement ... In the end, the museum is exemplary in its attempt to synthesize exhaustive knowledge available from an infinite number of sources, presenting it in all its complexity without ever dumbing it down for the visitor.”

With the same commitment to innovation Totem continues to open up new possibilities.

To coincide with Fifa's Soccer World Cup in 2010 Totem produced a book, "Mining the Future" and a documentary film, "Playing the Game the Bafokeng Way" to explain who the Bafokeng people were who hosted six world-cup games in Phokeng. Through this media Totem helped to connect the Bafokeng to the world and at the same time helped them to uncover their past and imagine their future.

Totem has also been breathing new life into the Bakgatla-ba-Kgafela in the Pilanesberg North West of Johannesberg by developing a Cultural Precinct with Museums and archives. See the project tabs on the left for more.
