PROMOTING THE PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT OF SCIENCE AND WORKING WITH SAASTA, NRF AND THE DST

From 2007 to 2012 Totem worked with the NRF (National Research Foundation), SAASTA (South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement) and the DST (Department of Science and Technology) to help develop a national strategy for the public engagement of science.

Our work with SAASTA and the NRF started out as a scoping exercise for the Johannesburg Observatory but soon became a critical evaluation of what needed to be done in the entire sector.

We had a series of conversations with academics, teachers, science centre communicators and media developers. There was consensus that there is a need for a more networked community of practice and an ongoing discourse on public engagement of science.

Totem’s work has contributed to a strategic re-evaluation of the public engagement of science in South Africa.
